Persuasive Writing Idea: (Student Directions)
From reading these books, we have seen many ways people have been persuaded to join the war. Now it is your turn to pretend you are the army recruiter trying to get young men to join your side of the army. So first, choose a side, Confederate or Union. Second, brainstorm a few ideas for your poster. Keep in mind that women were also a huge part of the war too, so you can include them in your poster! If you need any reminders about women during the Civil War, see The Great Women of the Civil War, By: Lucia Raatma. While you are brainstorming your ideas, remember the details about each side, and use these details as an “advantage” for that side. You will share your posters with the class and then display them around the room so your peers can see your hard work.
Expository Writing Idea: (Student Direction)
You are a Confederate/ Yankee soldier of the Civil War. You fought valiantly in the Battle of Gettysburg. You are cold, tired, and hungry, yet before you fall asleep, you must first write a newspaper account of your experiences for your hometown paper. Describe your experience. Give details that are specific and relevant to your experience.

Rationale for type instruction(D), (CL), (PB)
This lesson will be using direct instruction. Students have prior knowledge of writing a letter based off of the lessons taught prior to this one. Students are to take what they learn from the letters between the sisters in the book, and apply them in writing their own letters about life during the Civil War.
