Activity #2
The students will be given a list of words (the vocabulary words chosen from the book), and will compose an acrostic using the book to guide them to complete the activity. The words to choose from are:
Great Women of the Civil War

  • Bounty
  • Plantation
  • Segregated
  • Streetcar
  • Suffrage
To differentiate for this activity, have the “high” students write a sentence for each letter, and for the “low” group, have the students write a word or phrase for each letter. Show an example on the board, have the students list ideas before allowing them to work on their own. Model the word below:

Activity #3

For this activity, students will refer to the vocabulary list associated with the book, Yankee Blue or Rebel Gray? The Civil War Adventures of Sam Shaw, and complete the following graphic organizer. The students will complete the organizer for each word, but will take several days to do so. Give one organizer to the students at a time. The students will use the book to help them complete this activity. Be sure to have the student write down the page number where he/she found the word.
